Dear Brothers and Sisters:
We want to THANK YOU all for your support and update you on recent events. Despite the newspaper stories to the contrary – we DID NOT get defeated in the Legislature.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED:
There were a half a dozen bills to cut our benefits, including proposals to cut pension benefits by 9%, to put all new workers into 401K plans, to change the formula used to compute the pension from the average of the final 3 years to the average of the final 5 years, and to eliminate anyone not working 35 hours a week from healthcare and pension.
We launched a huge fight with our allies in AFSCME, IFPTE, AFT and the NJEA which included not only membership mobilization, but an extensive media campaign which brought pressure on the Legislature.
WE BEAT BACK;
* All cuts to Parks and Forestry;
* All layoffs;
* 9% cut in pension;
* New workers will not go into 401Ks;
* We keep 3 years final average salary;
* Part-timers keep pension and healthcare (where they have it).
But our enemies (Senators Steve Sweeney and Barbara Buono) are powerful and held the budget hostage. They extracted 3 concessions as a price of their vote:
* A bill changing the Normal Retirement Age for new workers from 60 to 62;
* At the end of our contract – ALL local government and state government workers lose the Lincoln’s Birthday holiday by statute;
* New part-timers will have to earn $7,500 a year to be in the pension plan instead of $1,500.
DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED. We protected our members and we have a Fight Back Plan!
* We demand that Corzine veto the bills that violate the contract.
* If he does not, we are filing a grievance. We will seek to enforce the contract.
* We are putting together a Day after Thanksgiving plan.
* We are putting together a “Reward our Friends – Punish Our Enemies” plan.
BOTTOM-LINE - We fought hard and beat back the worst. Many legislators are very angry at Sweeney and Buono for holding the budget hostage over the retirement age for people 25 years from now and over Lincoln’s Birthday (which saves nothing). We too will remember this and reward our friends and punish our enemies.
We don’t always win – but we do always fight! THANK YOU to every Shop Steward and every member who wrote or called their Legislator or came to Lobby Days or rallied to save our Parks. Your participation in mobilization, as always, made a HUGE difference in the outcome of this struggle.
In Solidarity,
John Rose, President
Kathleen Hernandez, Executive Vice President
John Polk, Secretary-Treasurer

In Memory of
Lorraine B. Kenny
KENNY Lorraine B. Kenny. Grandmother, worked for New Jersey City University, 73
Lorraine B. Kenny (nee Magelnicki) of Jersey City, formerly of Clark, died peacefully on Friday, July 25, 2008, surrounded by her children. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 39 E. 22nd St., Bayonne. Visitation is Thursday, July 31, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dworzanski Funeral Home, Bayonne. In addition, family and friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate Lorraine on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Madison Avenue Baptist Church, (MABC), 30 E. 31st St., N.Y., N.Y. 10016. Born and raised in Bayonne, Lorraine was 73. For the past 14 years, she was employed by New Jersey City University as an administrative assistant in the dean’s office, William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences. Blessed with a passion for knowledge, Lorraine enjoyed every aspect of the university setting, her friends, colleagues, fellow CWA 1031 members and the energy of the students. She particularly enjoyed attending the programs offered at the Speicher/Rubin Women’s Center (and then mailing them to her daughter to discuss). She was grateful that her union represented her well, particularly this year, and frustrated that Hillary Rodham Clinton lost her bid to be the Democratic nominee. She loved New York City and could not imagine why anyone would want to live anywhere else. She considered books on tape the greatest invention of her time. A most extraordinary, benevolent and charitable woman, Lorraine chose to live simply, always giving more to others than to herself. She was an active member of the Madison Avenue Baptist Church in New York City and treasured the congregation’s fellowship and programs. Over the years, she tirelessly volunteered many weekends and holidays to work within its homeless shelter and/or in any way she could help. Lorraine’s eyes always lit up for her grandchildren and she savored every last detail of their joys and accomplishments. Lorraine was a beloved and selfless mother to Paul Kenny Jr., the late Chris Kenny, Ellen Kenny and her fiancé, Sal Illuzzi, Lynn Greco and her husband, Jerry, and much-loved (former) daughter-in-law, Michele Kenny. Also surviving are six grandchildren, William Elder, Kathryn, Stephanie and Meghan Kenny, and Allison and Brian Greco. Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, John and Antonia (nee Kukowski) Magelnicki, and siblings, Charles, John and Maryann Magelnicki. Memorial donations may be made to MABC, 30 E. 31st St., N.Y., N.Y. 10016.

John,
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your time the other day. Personally taking my phone call, regarding my situation and handling the matter so quickly is greatly appreciated. It is comforting to know that the CWA has leadership in place that does what it says. Thank you again.
Very respectfully,

Good afternoon members!
It was a SEA of SOLIDARITY RED!
I wanted to share this photo with you ---- it shows
just
a portion of the thousands
of union members at the State House rally yesterday. I also want
to thank those from TCNJ who gave their lunch hour (and even a little longer) to
be part of this extremely important event -- I can't believe that Dave and I
found Carla Varlese and Lynda Schmucker there among those thousands!!!!
I'd also like to say a BIG thank you to all those involved in the organizing of
this event. It was no small task indeed. The lunch and drinks provided to all
attendees were plentiful and were even available on some of the shuttle buses.
The buses were on time and drop-off/pick-up points were scattered around the
area, which avoided traffic jams. Local 1031 had a table set up at the Masonic
Temple and handed out armbands. Great organization of the event.
Our CWA leadership is giving 110% in negotiating our next contract -- but we all
need to be part of the process -- I was proud to be part of the voices that
were heard loud and clear yesterday!!! Thanks again.
Have a wonderful and safe holiday.
Sue

Mr. Rose,
We just want to let you know how pleased we were with the excellent job that Rene Garzon and Phyllis Haefner did negotiating the union contract for the librarians at the Westfield Memorial Library.
We were especially impressed with their ability to obtain benefits for part-timers that were not available to those workers previously.
All in all they were very reliable and it was a job well done!
Sincerely yours
Laurie Anderson and Joan Gelman

Subject: GRATITUDE
Dear John:
Now that the dust has settled (hopefully so; unless you know something I do not know), I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your help in a situation that never should have been and then became a fiasco, both personally and professionally. You handled the matter with great persistence and fortitude and I believe the outcome is a positive one.
I hope that our only communications will be regarding social activities and union meetings here at WPU.
Take heart in knowing that you made a difference in my life.
Regards,
Jo-Ann
